The dahlias are the surprise. Their ball-shaped heads are built from rows of small cupped petals, a shade darker than the roses, so the box shows several reds at once. Large open roses sit beside tight spray rose buds, and the magenta stock adds height, a pink edge and a spicy-sweet scent. Slim snapdragon spikes, cream with pink tips, poke out past the roses and keep opening from the bottom up over the next days. The light box keeps all that red from looking heavy.
